Taichung is famous around Taiwan for its hundreds of large and small teahouses and cafes, spread across the entire city. In particular, the city's teahouses is especially popular among visitors. These cover a broad spectrum, from large, swanky, modern teahouses to traditional Chinese/Japanese-style traditional establishments.
The local coffee house scene also exploded during the 1990s, starting with smaller local outlets and growing to include American-style chains like Starbucks.
